World Soil Day 2017 is dedicated to research. Research generates knowledge and knowledge is the backbone for managing our land and soil sustainably. According to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, we are striving for a land degradation neutral world by the year 2030. The European Commission wants to achieve no more net land take in Europe by latest 2050. Current knowledge gaps in Europe and available options to close them are key issues for discussion at World Soil Day 2017. Policy-makers, end-users of research and scientists will share where they perceive the most crucial knowledge gaps and express their demands and expectations for future European and transnational science and research. A special track will bring together funders to discuss options for the implementation of transnational research.
Event is organised by the European Commission funded Coordination and Support INSPIRATION project and the Soils4EU service contract to DG Environment.

INSPIRATION project
The main goal of the INSPIRATION project is to support actions aimed at developing a Strategic Research Agenda for Europe, integrating the problems of scientific research concerning protection of environmental potential, particularly soils, and sustainable land management.
The project is implemented by scientific and research units, together with partners from state administration and economy sector from 16 EU Member States. Work on the development of the European Research Agenda is conducted under four integrated topics: 1) efficiency of the use of resources – energy, water, raw materials, etc., 2) management of natural capital – ecosystem-related services, 3) land management, 4) ”net impact” – global consequences of climate change, demand for natural resources in biosphere, consumption of biosphere natural resources, etc.
IETU is one of the 21 partners implementing the project. The institute hosts the National Contact Point and is the leader of the topic concerning land management.
