Transformations of urbanised environment

Sustainable urban development should ensure safety, welfare and comfort for residents, a place for conducting business activity for entrepreneurs as well as proper conditions for the development of science and knowledge. At the same time, the urbanised environment should better and more effectively adapt to climate change.

The scope of our research includes:

  • methods and tools for urbanised environment management in the context of adaptation to climate change, in that:
    • testing the susceptibility of city development systems and processes to climate change,
    • modelling spatial development trends in urbanised areas in the context of adaptation to climate change,
    • analyses of interactions between biodiversity, ecosystem functions and services in urban areas,
    • development of methods and tools for managing the adaptation to climate change in urban areas,
  • methods of shaping the spatial structure of urbanised areas, with a special focus on degraded urban and industrial areas and their transformation to fulfil new functions, including:
    • methods for delimitation of functional areas taking into account environmental, spatial and socio-economic criteria,
    • methods of alternative options in spatial development based on models and data visualisation,
    • methods of location data and spatial model visualisation on a regional and urban planning scale,
    • land transformation scenarios and changing the land use pattern to fulfil new economic and social functions.
