New application of methods and tools worked out in ZiZOZap

Bathymetric measurement method, spatial imaging of physicochemical parameters in water reservoirs, large-scale data analyses or mathematical modelling of processes occurring in aquatic ecosystems are examples of innovations developed under the ZiZOZap project.

Scientists from the University of Silesia, Cracow University of Technology, Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas and the Institute of Environmental Engineering - Polish Academy of Sciences during the analyses of the Goczałkowice Reservoir, conducted in 2010-2014, developed a number of methods and tools to analyse the data used in environmental management. They enable the scientists to perform quick and more advanced analyses of various measurement data.

The bathymetric measurement method (patent application filed with the Polish Patent Office), imaging of the spatial physicochemical parameters in the reservoir water, large-scale data analyses, or mathematical modelling of the processes were used in the research conducted by scientists at the University of Silesia on the reservoirs:  Sosina, Paprocany, Małe and Duże Dzierżno as well as the pond located in Duże Planty Park in Mikołów.

More information about the innovative solutions developed by the researchers involved in the project: "Integrated support system for management and protection of water dam reservoir" ZiZOZap can be found in video materials.

  • Specially tailored Geoportal  - provides access to information and the collected mapping data characterizing the reservoir and its catchment. Geoportal designers are able to create - individually for each reservoir - a tool that corresponds to the reservoir characteristics and meets the expectations of its administrator.
  • Monitoring and models of the reservoir  - managing water resources in the situation of increasing environmental burden requires - according to the provisions of the Water Framework Directive - not only monitoring but also modelling of dam reservoirs.
  • What is the role of reeds?   - Controlling the reeds on the banks of dam reservoirs is extremely important. This is a place of fish spawning, bird nesting, amphibian and reptile habitat. It provides an effective natural barrier for pollutants flowing into the lake water. Their lack causes faster shore erosion. All these factors have an impact on the quality of water in the reservoir.
  • How many fish is in the reservoir? - In breeding ponds, where stocking is the only source of fish, their quantity can be estimated using appropriate algorithms. In lakes or reservoirs it is a more complicated task. There are a lot of uncontrolled factors affecting the number and composition of fish species. In order to control the population very precise methods are required.
