First meeting of the CICADA4CE project’s Urban Living Lab

On October 7, 2024, the first meeting of the Urban Living Lab created within the CICADA4CE project - “Efficiency of climate change adaptation management by incorporating ecosystem services integrated with social activities in Central European cities”, co-financed by the Interreg Central Europe Program, took place at the Center for Environmental Education - Exotarium in Sosnowiec. The Polish team in the project consists of IETU as the Leader and UM Sosnowiec as a Partner.

The meeting was attended by Students of the Janusz Korczak High School and members of the Sosnowiec Intergenerational Integration Club. They took an active part in theoretical and workshop activities devoted to raising awareness of Sosnowiec residents about climate change and counteracting its negative effects. The discussions were moderated by experts from the Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas in Katowice and representatives of the Sosnowiec Municipality.

In four intergenerational groups, young people and seniors were talking about the urban heat island and ways to reduce it, air quality and sustainable mobility, biodiversity and water management in the city. Each group developed its own vision of Sosnowiec. Our project assumes that combining the courage and creativity of young minds with the experience and life wisdom of elders can be extremely valuable in creating a vision of how the city can be better defended against the effects of high temperatures, excessive precipitation surges and other adverse phenomena associated with climate change.
