CICADA4CE – Efficiency of the ClImate Change ADAptation management by integration of ecosystem services and smart social approaches in Central European cities

Climate change is currently one of the most significant problems in the world. Efforts to counter this challenge focused mainly on mitigation. In recent years, the importance of adaptation activities has increased as adapting to the effects of climate change, felt mainly in urban areas.
The city's adaptive capabilities should include technological potential but also the innovative contribution of the social and ecological system including innovative institutional, organizational and social solutions. Hence, it is necessary to use an approach that integrates three elements: ecosystem services, the participation of a smart community and a smart city.

IETU is the coordinator of the project, which involves 12 partners from the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy and Poland (in addition to IETU, the city of Sosnowiec).

The aim of the project is to strengthen urban adaptation plans to climate change by activating ecosystem services as effective and economically beneficial methods integrated with "hard" technical solutions. This approach will also be linked to social inclusion, thus creating an adaptation based simultaneously on ecosystem and community activities (Ecosystem-based adaptation with Community based Adaptation – ECbA). In this way, the project will use naturally existing ecosystems (e.g. water-filled sinkholes, wetlands, urban forests, etc.) that could support the city's adaptation to climate change. These activities will be integrated with public participation. The project will demonstrate the benefits of incorporating these adaptation actions into adaptation strategies and plans.
