COP24 – Circular economy and climate change

Presentations and debates on the circular economy model were the subject of the Innovation Day, which was organised on December 5, 2019 in the Polish pavilion during COP24. Izabela Ratman-Kłosińska, Head of the Environmental Technology Verification Body at IETU took part in the event. During the panel discussion she presented how the European Environmental Technology Verification System (ETV) can be used in promoting the development of circular economy. The panel was attended by Magda Gosk from the Ministry of the Environment, Katarzyna Maryniak from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, Paweł Okrasa - the Mayor of Wieluń, Łukasz Waksmundzki from EcoTech System, and Michał Jan Cichy from The Polish Cleaner Production Movement Society.

Circular economy requires development and implementation of innovative environmental technologies which are resource-efficient or use recyclable materials as substitutes for primary raw materials, or allow the recovery of other raw materials. The demand for these technologies is going to increase, not only in waste management, but also in construction sector or water and wastewater management. ETV enables reliable confirmation of the effectiveness and innovativeness of these technologies in comparison to conventionally applicable solutions - says Izabela Ratman-Kłosińska.

The Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology emphasises that the global trend of transformation towards a circular economy is in line with the Paris Agreement, the implementation of which was the main issue addressed during COP24. Innovation plays a key role in this trend, and the change requires commitment not only from the public administration but also industry and non-governmental organisations.
