Urban plans for adaptation to climate change for 44 Polish cities

In the Ministry of the Environment, at the presence of Deputy Minister of the Environment, Government Plenipotentiary for Climate Policy - Mr. Paweł Sałek, an agreement for implementation of an innovative project "Developing plans for adaptation to climate change in cities with more than 100 000 inhabitants" was signed. The partners of the project are 44 largest Polish cities.

Cities that will be included in the analysis are inhabited by 30% of the Polish population and generate about 50% of GDP. In each city climate vulnerability analysis will be conducted and actions aimed at adaptation to the identified threats will be planned.

The development of urban adaptation plans will be accompanied by informative and educational activities carried out under the slogan "Let's feel the climate" aimed at raising public awareness of the necessity of  adaptation to climate change.
“Cities are particularly vulnerable to climate change. The plans are to help inure and adapt them to the changing conditions”, said Paweł Sałek, Deputy Minister of the Environment, Government Plenipotentiary for Climate Policy.
The project is being implemented by a consortium consisting of leading units acting in the field of environmental protection: Institute for Environmental Protection - National Research Institute, Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute, Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas and the design and consultancy company - Arcadis.
The project is financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment and from the state budget.
The Ministry of the Environment, as a project coordinator, will monitor its implementation on an on-going basis to ensure effective co-operation between 44 cities and expert teams and high quality of adaptation plans. For the preparation of 44 urban adaptation plans the developers have two years.

In 2014 the Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas developed an expertise, which became the basis for the preparation of the Urban Adaptation Handbook containing guidelines for the development of the Urban Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change.
