InfoSMOG-MED

The InfoSMOG-MED information and education project is focused on air quality. It is a response of the Silesian Voivodship’s inhabitants to the actual identified needs connected with air quality forecasts, warnings, smog alerts and information concerning the impact of pollution on human health.

The main goal of the project is to create an electronic platform and application for mobile devices to inform about the air quality along with a communication system for residents regarding health  aspects and a communication system for healthcare entities from the Silesian Voivodship.

The information will include, among others:

  • air quality information (emission load of NOx, SO2, PM10, PM2.5, concentrations of NOx, SO2, PM10, PM2.5, and air quality indices)
  • short-term air quality forecast (48 hours)
  • health risk forecast for vulnerable groups

Data on air pollution levels will be obtained from the air quality monitoring system (http://powietrze.gios.gov.pl/pjp/current).

This information will help individual users and healthcare entities to be properly prepared for the possible occurrence of smog and the exceedance of the information and alert levels.

It is particularly important that in the periods of the predicted exceedances in the air quality standards (http://powietrze.gios.gov.pl/pjp/content/alarm_levels) the healthcare entities should be prepared to admit more patients.

In the case of a forecast informing about the exceedance of the air quality standards and the occurrence of a health threat for a specific location, the users of the internet platform and the mobile application will receive a message - a recommendation on the course of action / behaviour during the threat depending on their gender, age, or disease.

The platform will also serve as a tool for conducting wide-ranging awareness raising activities as part of information and education campaigns to increase public awareness of the dangers arising from non-ecological behaviour and air pollution.

The Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas is responsible for modelling air quality forecasts, development of IT infrastructure and launching the InfoSMOG-MED IT system in the form of the internet platform and the mobile application.

The Silesian Centre of Heart Diseases will develop a health risk forecasting system - health mapping, individual reporting (in terms of cardiological, pulmonological, paediatric and geriatric diseases, allergies, diabetes), as well as communication with healthcare entities.

The information and education campaign planned by the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodship is aimed at promoting pro-ecological behaviour and increasing the awareness of the importance of caring for health and the environment.

On the basis of the concluded Partnership Agreement the project will be implemented by:

Project duration: 27 months, August 2019 - October 2021.

The total budget of the project: 5.7 million PLN, including co-financing from the European Union funds of 4.6 million PLN and co-financing from the national state budget of 0.542 million PLN.
